Book it, here are some good reads 📚

by Professional Development

A client of mine asked me for some book recommendations. They’re at a transition point so the subject matter isn’t as specific as I’d normally do. But since I was coming up with a good list of reads I thought of course I should share it with you.

I do a good amount of reading and have recently started adding audiobooks to my repertoire since I’ve been trying to do more walking. I can tell I haven’t been walking enough because my current book is about to be checked back into the library.

Here are a few gems:

  • Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett & Dave Evans – This is my fave recco for someone I meet with who isn’t ready to see a coach yet, they do a great job of giving you some great tools to figure out how to create a life you want, and it has a good professional slant.
  • Essentialism by Greg McKeown – I frequently espouse many of the tenets of this, figuring out what’s the most important to you and focusing your time on that is critical to getting so many of us out of the more/exhaustion hamster wheel.
  • Atomic Habits by James Clear – There are a few of these habit people and they’re all good but I ended up getting on his mailing list, etc. but the fact that who we are is made up of what we do, well let’s learn the science of making that what we want.
  • The Productivity Project by Chris Baily – I love productivity, not because I want to (or want you to) do more, I want to do the right things and I want to be as efficient as I can with spending the right amount of time on things, this includes rest and fun and stuff.
  • The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stanier – Many of the leaders I work with are just starting to experience the benefits of coaching, MBS lays out basic questions that are easy to start using with team interactions to lean into the power.
  • Energy Leadership by Bruce D Schneider – Energy Leadership was one of the foundational pieces of the coaching program I attended (iPEC) and this is written by the founder, understanding work dynamics and knowing how you can shift them is magic (I also do an assessment on this).

I also just finished my 2023 books post (fiction and nonfiction) and there are a few gems that I’ll add to my faves list.

What are the books that you have found the most helpful?

Time for a new job description

Time for a new job description

New job? Maybe.   I started with a new client and they noted that as they were thinking about starting a family maybe other job options might have more balance. They had done what a lot of my clients had done: focus on their job and work harder to succeed. And...

Let’s make it easy

Let’s make it easy

One of the reasons I wanted to do last week's panel on personal brand is that while it can make a huge impact, you can actually make some easy changes once you start to think about it. And yes, you can also make it hard, but that's not what we're about.   So, I...

2024 books so far

2024 books so far

I made a decision last year as I was writing up my 2023 best books list (and tv and movies) that I was going to at least write down the books that I had read each quarter so it wouldn't be such a slog at the end of the year. I missed the first quarter so I promised...

Are you doing enough relationship building?

Are you doing enough relationship building?

In our panel conversation Living in a World of Layoffs, we talked a lot about how important relationships are no matter your current situation.   When we're talking about hiring the statistics are significant. Most say that at least 50% of roles are filled via...

Living in a world of layoffs

Living in a world of layoffs

I've actually never been laid off. And I've been at a lot of companies that went through layoffs. Was it luck? Mostly. But there are some things I've learned along the way... And I've seen firsthand what it's like for people to lose their jobs. I've also had to deal...

My bad good goal

My bad good goal

No more back outages in 2024! This was the bad goal I told to my personal trainer. It's not a bad goal because it's not what I want. It's a bad goal because I can't actually make that happen. When we talk about our SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable,...

Communication for the win

Communication for the win

I recently started working with a client who was a new department Director. They inherited a department that for various reasons wasn't looking so good. They were worried that their team wasn't performing well. And they were worried about what the Leadership Team...

You need help!

You need help!

I often have people tell me that they know someone (or someones) that could use a coach. But they're not sure if it's ok to share a coach referral because basically, they feel like they're telling them that there is something wrong with them.   The first part of...

Stop dreading that conversation

Stop dreading that conversation

I spent some time recently talking about my Black Friday offers. Honestly, sales offers usually feel a little awkward. But I remind myself that I'm offering it because I think it's a good deal on a good course that will really benefit you. And whether you chose to...

No more new year new you

No more new year new you

I was completely a "new year new you" person for years. Each new year rolled around and this was finally going to be the year I was going to do things differently.   I tried resolutions. I tried goals. I tried themes. I tried big. I tried small.   But at the...
