What I liked about getting Covid

by Personal Development

So Covid sucks, obviously. I had been lucky to avoid it for as long as I did but this last uptick got me.

And while it is definitely not how I wanted to spend the last ten or so days I’m a learn-from-your-experience kind of gal. So here are a few of the things that I liked.

So if you have a new relationship with your manager a few things to keep in mind (these also pretty much apply to existing managers):

  • You know what you’re getting into – Of course, this varies, but I usually don’t have a roadmap when I get sick. And I always tend to underestimate how long being sick is going to take me out. With this one, I mostly cleared the decks so I’d have time to deal and recover. And when you tell someone you have Covid they get it in a way that I feel like “I’m sick” doesn’t resonate, but probably that’s something I just need to get over.
  • Clear to-dos each day – Because I wasn’t feeling up to it, I was super clear on what needed to happen during the day and I prioritized those things. Whether it was getting a DoorDash order into Walgreens on Day 1 or getting a new client contract out on Day 4 I made sure to focus on what was most important. And I gave myself credit for everything I did, dishes, recycling, you name it.
  • TV time – There is a sweet spot after you feel like you’ve been hit by a truck but before you start to actually feel better where you really can’t do anything and don’t feel guilty about it. This was the perfect opportunity to dig into my TV watching backlog of lighter fare that might be enjoyable but I was kind of putting off. The highlight was “Shrinking” on Apple but I also caught up on “Ted Lasso,” “Mythic Quest,” “Wednesday,” “Lincoln Lawyer,” “Heartstopper,” and “The Other Two.” (If you’re interested in more of the TV that I get into on a regular basis you can check out my blog procrastinationchronicles.com.)
  • I have a kind support network – I am pretty self-sufficient and thank goodness everyone delivers. But I can’t say how nice it was to have people checking in on me and offering support.

So moving forward I’m going to overestimate how long it will take me to fully recover. I’ll embrace that thinking next time I get sick (because sadly there will be a next time). I’m not going to pile too many things on my to-do list and I’m going to focus on the most important thing(s). And I’m going to celebrate how much I do even on days when I get “nothing” done.

As for TV, I’m actually excited to take a step away and fill my days with other things, but I am going to continue some good bad shows and not just good shows. And I’m going to remind myself that reaching out with even a text message can make a difference.

Anything else you can think of that was good if you’ve been taken down?

Time for a new job description

Time for a new job description

New job? Maybe.   I started with a new client and they noted that as they were thinking about starting a family maybe other job options might have more balance. They had done what a lot of my clients had done: focus on their job and work harder to succeed. And...

Let’s make it easy

Let’s make it easy

One of the reasons I wanted to do last week's panel on personal brand is that while it can make a huge impact, you can actually make some easy changes once you start to think about it. And yes, you can also make it hard, but that's not what we're about.   So, I...

2024 books so far

2024 books so far

I made a decision last year as I was writing up my 2023 best books list (and tv and movies) that I was going to at least write down the books that I had read each quarter so it wouldn't be such a slog at the end of the year. I missed the first quarter so I promised...

Living in a world of layoffs

I've actually never been laid off. And I've been at a lot of companies that went through layoffs. Was it luck? Mostly. But there are some things I've learned along the way... And I've seen firsthand what it's like for people to lose their jobs. I've also had to deal...

Book it, here are some good reads 📚

My bad good goal

My bad good goal

No more back outages in 2024! This was the bad goal I told to my personal trainer. It's not a bad goal because it's not what I want. It's a bad goal because I can't actually make that happen. When we talk about our SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable,...

I spent some time recently talking about my Black Friday offers. Honestly, sales offers usually feel a little awkward. But I remind myself that I'm offering it because I think it's a good deal on a good course that will really benefit you. And whether you chose to...
